In this artist's book one of the distinctive features of Alessandra Calò's work is recognisable: the superimposition of different levels that create a unitary, harmonious, symbolic image.

In this case the artist has put together three different photographs: those of  hands, of plants and of writings.
The hands are those of some frail people with whom Calò carried out a workshop that lasted four months, with a darkroom set up at the Palazzo dei Musei, for a collaborative project called “Encounters! Art and people "which develops from the Reggio Città senza Barriere project " B. Right to beauty ”.

The plants, collected in the first phase of this workshop project, are not noble and well-kept plants, but those that are commonly defined "weeds", referring to the concept of fragility / diversity understood as "what does not fall within the canons" and with the aim to discover the beauty of little things.
Photographic herbaria were then created using ancient contact printing techniques of the 19th century, such as callotype, which do not favour precision, high resolution, but on the contrary, determine a creative process made up of trial and error that is more "Human" and inclusive.
Finally, the third level, that of calligraphy, is taken from a herbarium by Antonio Cremona Casoli dated 1883-845, kept at the Civic Museums of Reggio Emilia, which does not have a strictly scientific approach, but more "sentimental". With these juxtapositions Calò succeeds in reinterpreting and enhancing a part of an archive, relating the contemporary with the past.

For the artist "Herbarium the flowers have remained pink" is a starting point to reflect on new ways of conceiving an image: in the representation of the gesture of care evoked by the protagonists, the imagined action becomes iconic and, thanks to the superimposition of the images, it 'triggers a symbiosis between humanity and nature depicted.'
