The reception was divided and passionate. The book and show unabashedly forced the art world to deal with colour photography, a medium scarcely taken seriously at the time, and with the vernacular content of a body of photographs that could have been but definitely weren't some average person's Instamatic pictures from the family album. These photographs heralded a new mastery of the use of colour as an integral element of photographic composition. Bound in a textured cover inset with a photograph of a tricycle and stamped with yearbook-style gold lettering, the Guide contained 48 images edited down from 375 shot between 1969 and 1971 and displayed a deceptively casual, actually superrefined look at the surrounding world. Here are people, landscapes and odd little moments in and around Eggleston's home town of Memphis - an anonymous woman in a loudly patterned dress and cat's eye glasses sitting, left leg slightly raised, on an equally loud outdoor sofa; a coal-fired barbecue shooting up in flames, framed by a shiny silver tricycle; the curves of a gleaming black car fender, and someone's torso; a tiny, grey-haired lady in a faded, flowered housecoat, standing expectant, and dwarfed in the huge dark doorway of a mint-green room whose only visible furniture is a shaded lamp on an end table. The release of the second printing in September 2022 marked the fiftieth anniversary of Okinawa’s reversion to Japan in 1972 since its’ occupation by the US after World War II. Red Flower celebrates the courageous and honest lives of women she met and befriended while working at bars in Koza and Kin that were hang-outs for black soldiers from the local US military bases in Okinawa. The book features several unpublished photographs from artist's first book, ”Hot Days in Camp Hansen" published in 1982. Red Flower is the seminal work of Ishikawa, marking the starting point of her subsequently long career as a photographer. Designed with full-bleed images reproduced in a large format with intense b/w printing which successfully conveys the original lively spirit and tension of Ishikawa’s Camp Hansen work, available once again for wider public appreciation with an essay by the artist

Title: Red Flower, The Women of Okinawa
Publisher: Session Press, 2017, 2nd printing 2022
Photographers: Mao Ishikawa
Author: Text by Mao Ishikawa
Graphic Design: Studio Lin, NYC
Format: Softcover
Size: 23 x 33 cm, 112 pages

Poster to accompany the 2024 Daido Moriyama Retrospective.

Title: Daido Moriyama Harumi Poster
Publisher: The Photographers' Gallery, 2024
Format: Poster in cardboard tube
Size: A2, 42 x 59.4 cm, landscape format

Considered one of the most influential contemporary artists from Eastern Europe, he has been developing a body of experimental photographic work exploring social and political subjects for more than fifty years.

Boris Mikhailov’s pioneering practice encompasses documentary photography, conceptual work, painting and performance. The work offers a journey through the mythic and evolving American South, seen through the artist’s lens: vibrant colors and a profound sense of nostalgia echo throughout Eggleston’s breathtaking oeuvre. His motifs of signage, cars, and roadside scenes create an iconography of American vistas that inspired a generation of photographers. His passion for photography was ignited when he joined a local church's camera club. A rebellious thirteen-year-old, Morris skipped school to meet—and photograph—Marley, an encounter that would catapult him into a whirlwind tour with Marley and, subsequently, the Sex Pistols as their official photographer. His adventures in the reggae and punk scenes of the 1970s laid the groundwork for a multidecade career spanning photography, art direction, design, and music.

The book unfolds in two symbiotic parts: the first captures Morris's unapologetic lens on race, culture, and identity in 1970s Britain, while the second surveys his collaborations with music legends, including—in addition to Marley—Lee "Scratch" Perry, Gregory Isaacs, and Marianne Faithfull. Featuring an original contribution from Sean O'Hagan and an essay by the late cultural theorist Stuart Hall, this publication promises to delight both photography aficionados and music lovers alike.

Title: Music + Life
Publisher: Thames & She creates her own photographic paper by applying a photosensitive emulsion with a brush to Italian Fabriano watercolor paper. Subsequently the emulsions are meticulously cleared off with a paintbrush and hot water, as if drawing shadows.

As a result, the drawings-like intuitive outlines of her subjects, which are characteristic of her work, can be perceived as both aspect: the photographic one that captures an instant in time, and the pictorial one that is completed over time while defining lines and shadows. The result is an ambitious project, one sketching a personal journey in which she ultimately tackles the complexity of material representation in these fragmented and troubling times.

Title: The Canary and The Hammer
Publisher: Mack, 2019
Photographer: Lisa Barnard
Format: Silkscreened hardcover with Japanese paper
Size: 20x29cm, 200 Pages
ISBN: 9781912339334

Loose Joints is honoured to announce Painted Frames, a little-known collection of works by the late Malick Sidibé. As the most recent body of work by Kawauchi who returned to her point of origin –the connection between nature and human beings– and thus took a different look at the world during this turbulent time, this series goes beyond “Ametsuchi” and “Halo” through which she had established her perspective by contemplating nature. To ensure the focus, flash, and print quality were all up to standard at the end of each service, Adler would take a seat in the booth and produce a test strip of photographs. Through these weekly tests, Adler produced an archive of thousands upon thousands of photographs. While his decades-long operation has contributed to the photography of over a million people, these self-portraits are the only surviving record of Adler’s life’s work – a tangible document of his role in maintaining the photobooth tradition. The images that appear in Auto-Photo, which span from the 1970s to the 2010s, give us clues about the person who inhabits them, along with the passing of time. Adler’s gappy grin, comedic expressions, and pet cats intermingle with shifting fashions, retro colour film tints, and an increasing crinkling around the eyes.

In 2018, with the booth at Flinders Street Station facing imminent closure, Christopher Sutherland and Jessie Norman – whose operation later became known as Metro-Auto-Photo – began working with Adler to generate interest in his work and to successfully save his photobooth. Now in his nineties, Adler has since sold his photobooths to Metro-Auto-Photo, who have compiled this publication with the CCP and Perimeter to illuminate Adler, his unique collection, and his impact One of the foremost practitioners in the medium’s history, Eggleston is widely considered the father of color photography. He pioneered the use of dye-transfer printing for art photography in the 1970s. The technically advanced process—first developed by Kodak in the 1940s—allowed him to achieve the richness of tonal depth and color saturation that he had been searching for. In the early 1990s, Kodak stopped producing the dyes, paper, and film used for this process. Deeply moved by Donna's life and photographs, Hélène set out to echo them.

Donna Gottschalk's work paints a social, political and intimate portrait of an invisible America, from the late 1960s to the 1980s. As a member of the queer community herself, and involved in the early lesbian rights movement, Donna focused on photographing people on the margins of society, with whom she lived, campaigned and worked: her relatives, friends, lovers and comrades in struggle. Her favorite mode of expression is the portrait, which she strives to capture without artifice. The people she photographs pose for her in an intimate setting, most often in her apartment, fully embracing their freedom. With a sensitive, committed and non-judgmental eye, Donna gradually builds up a family album, a collective memory.

Throughout the book, a text by Hélène Giannecchini activates, reveals and extends Donna Gottschalk's images. It holds love and laughter; it can extend our sense of the possible. Moved to honour a form of relation often subordinated to romantic and familial ties, and to explore a part of her own history, Hélène Giannecchini pieces together an alternative genealogy of queer ancestors. In searching and sensitive prose, she sifts the past to bring existences deemed ‘marginal’ into communion with each other, traces of which may remain only in memory and archival fragments. Roving from Casa Susanna, a space of freedom from persecution in McCarthyite North America, to the diary of a man living with HIV in France, and to the life and work of pioneering lesbian photographer Donna Gottschalk, each narrative counters oblivion through loving acts of witness. The domination of the couple-form over human life can and must be brought to an end, and Giannecchini deftly points to all the places where it is already dead (or perhaps always was).
