In 2008 Leiko Shiga won the prestigious Ihee Kimure Photography Award an an ICP Infinity Award. Instead of carrying on working in a similar style to that which made her name she moved Kitakama, a coastal town in Japan's Tohoku region, where she began working as the town's official photographer.
There she collaborated over four years with the locals to create Rasen Kaigan. The result is a performative project that calls to mind surrealism, land art, happenings, sculpture and the presence of Japanese "earth spirits" and more all in the shadow of the Fukushima disaster.
This extraordinary book is a strange tour de force and now out of print and highly collectable.
