Ben Elwes: Monday Market. Book Launch & Signing. Thu 26 Jul, 18.00 - 20.00

Please join us in the Bookshop and meet photographer Ben Elwes who is launching his self published photobook Monday Market. The book is a photographic record of a traditional weekly market in the historic town of Aylsham in north Norfolk. It includes passages of text by the local author Elspeth Barker and the retired Keys auctioneer Martyn Fox.

Monday market, which was started in Aylsham in the early 1950s by Geoffrey Key as a small livestock market selling mainly poultry, is still running on the same site although today it is better known as Keys Fine Art Auctioneers. As Martyn Fox, former Keys auctioneer remembers: “Walk through Keys saleground today and you’ll see a long rusty steel platform about 30 feet long and three feet high with makeshift steps at the top end. It sits redundant awaiting the scrap dealers cutting lance. What was it used for? Who remembers it? There are many Norfolk buyers who could tell a tale or two and enlighten you.” One of them is Ben Elwes.
