Taryn Simon’s An American Index of the Hidden and Unfamiliar, for which she was shortlisted for the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize was exhibited at The Photographers’ Gallery in 2007.
An Occupation of Loss, co-commissioned by Artangel and New York’s Park Avenue Armory, will be presented in a cavernous undiscovered space beneath Islington Green from 17 - 28 April 2018. For this major new work, Taryn Simon has invited professional mourners from countries including, Azerbaijan, China, Greece, Russia and Venezuela, to enact rituals of grief and lamentation. These rituals are orchestrated by the collective presence and movement of the audience around one of London’s unexplored subterranean locations.
