Robbie Spotswood: I Just Want to Stay Home (signed)

I don’t speak my mother’s language. I am Obroni (white person) in Ghana and Black in England. I don’t feel like either label makes me an outcast and I won’t get into the “being black enough” monologue.

My home has random items that I don’t throw out because “maybe we need it”. I get it from my mum.

Dead plants that make me feel at home.

Hanging alongside family photos are traditional Ghanaian artwork (souvenirs bought from artists in Accra, we don’t know them personally; my mum wants to feel more Ghanaian), hung beside framed prints of European paintings credited to artists I don’t remember the names of. I could never be bothered to look closely enough to read the name to commit it to memory.

I have a hard time remembering small beautiful moments.
