This beautifully produced hard cover book about the nomadic tribes of India. It contains a decade of work, with photographs selected from across several states of India. There are numerous nomadic communities in India who have played an important role in society for many generations. Tragically they are now some of the most marginalized people of India.
Through evocative duo toned and some colour images, this captivating photo book reveals hidden threads in India’s cultural tapestry. For centuries, nomadic communities of knife sharpeners, conjurers, storytellers, and others roamed the land, contributing richly to village life and providing vital services. Today these skills, passed down through generations, are no longer in demand and the nomads find themselves out of step with contemporary society. Photos and text in the book take an immersive journey to the heart of these communities, highlighting the struggle to adapt, the state-sanctioned erosion of identity, and the poignant reality of decades of marginalisation. Without address or birth certificates they are invisible to the authorities and their 'outside' existence now fosters feelings of suspicion and prejudice amongst the mainstream
populace.
This book depicts their present lifestyle showing some of the problems and prejudices they face from society in general as well as the influence the colonial rulers have had in branding some of these communities as criminals and prohibited to move outside their settlement camps.
Introduction is by Ms. Mittal Patel (no relation), an activist for human rights with deep understanding of the needs of nomadic tribes narrates the tensions between the nomads and the settled populace. Mittal was awarded the “Woman Power Award” by President of India on International Women’s Day in 2018. Bharat Is an Oxford based documentary photographer who regularly spends time in India working on social issues relating to women workers as well as nomadic communities.
