Silberra’s U400 is an ISO 400/27° panchromatic black and white negative film, and one of two new “U” film stocks from the company. The films have been designed to take advantage of a high-contrast, mixed-grain emulsion, which combines both flat and classic grain, allowing the film to provide the high resolving power of T-grain while preserving the natural tonal softness of classic emulsions.
It is multi-speed, mixed-grain, panchromatic film, capable of being exposed at EI 100, 200 and 400 whilst preserving acceptable contrast and dynamic range. The “U” name (for those who have followed Silberra’s history), comes from their ULTIMA series, which is based on the same substrate: a thin, flat and crystal clear polyester base.
Silberra advises a number of precautions when using U films:
- Loading the film subdued light (due to a very thin base, the first frame may appear to be overexposed as a result of light to penetrating the film cartridge light shield).
- When loading film for development, ensure the reels are absolutely dry to avoid displacement.
In recognition of the first point above, Silberra U films are loaded at 37-exposure, non-DX coded cartridges. The first batch Silberra U film became available on retail in June 2018 and is considered an “open test batch”.
