Swaying between the explicitness of the individual instant and the ambiguity of a larger story, Hiromi Furusato’s series “Tide” explores the possibilities of the moment – as a space to rest, to reflect, to read into the future, and to simply be. Composed of photographs taken over a period of ten years in the city of Ishinomaki in Miyagi Prefecture, “Tide” primarily follows a woman as life continues to unfold. We see her kissing, staring into space or into the camera, lying in a hospital bed, lying side by side with the photographer, sleeping, standing in a backyard, or having a sudden nosebleed, interspersed with images of children, old clothes, a funeral, a group photo of friends, food, or an oddly shaped cloud.

“One striking aspect of this work is how women of all generations build relationships, their bonds forming a solid axis of life. The gaze and time quietly passed down—from grandmother to mother, daughter, friend, neighbor—are individual acts, yet undeniably carry a sense of community.

The gaze fixed upon her is simultaneously returned to us.
When we face each other within the photograph, how earnestly have we gazed back at one another?”
