dBritish documentary photographer Sophie Green is pleased to announce the release of her new limited edition book, Tangerine Dreams, an intimate exploration of the diverse communities and subcultures that shape contemporary British society. Over the past decade, Green has immersed herself in these communities, each cultivating a unique sense of belonging through shared heritage and tradition.
From the high-octane thrills of banger racing, where drivers intentionally destroy cars they’ve lovingly built, to the vibrant energy of traveller horse fairs filled with horse trading, family reunions, and cockerel fights—Tangerine Dream captures the pulse of these rituals and the people who live them. Green delves into the spiritual allure of Aladura Spiritualist African church congregations, where native hymns are sung alongside shared Nigerian meals, and the spectacle of street car festivals, where modified cars symbolise masculinity, prestige, and respect. Through these images, Green explores themes of community, identity, and the search for connection in an increasingly fragmented world.
Green reflects on how culture is a collective act of meaning-making, where rituals transcend individual experiences to create shared identity. "Through these images, I’ve learned that rituals are not just traditions but living, evolving expressions of who we are. They reflect our deepest drives to find meaning, joy, and connection."
